Mold
A climate rich with moisture and humidity such as the Hawaiian Islands produces a multitude of different varieties of rapidly growing molds and mildews. Mold can grow inside homes, places of work, hotel rooms, schools, or other buildings, in completely unseen areas. It can exist underneath a building, in an attic, a crawlspace, air ducts, air conditioning vents, storage areas or hidden behind walls and ceilings. The mold itself may remain unseen; however, its spores make it to the outer surface where it becomes airborne.

Mold that can be seen is normally discovered on the walls, ceilings or windows in a bathroom, bedroom or kitchen. The spores from mold travel through the air entering the body through breathing and through skin pores when coming into contact with skin. There may be a musty or strong odor which makes the presence of mold or mildew very obvious, however a large amount of mold can be present without a detectable odor.

Outdoors, the wind can carry mold and mildew spores miles from its original source. Anyone sensitive to mold can easily become exposed to it whether inside or outdoors. Not all mold is toxic, however, it can still cause troublesome symptoms to persons sensitive to it. Vog Remedy

History of the Vog in Hawaii

The Kilauea volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. In 1983 it became known for its spectacular lava fountains and flows which were occurring approximately once every three weeks. Kilauea volcano also emits an astounding 2,000 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO2) each day, during periods of sustained eruptions. SO2 is a poisonous gas that irritates the skin and the tissues and mucus membranes of the eyes, nose and throat.

Since mid 1986 this volcano began producing a steadier stream of lava and gas. Deep within the volcano where the pressure is high, noxious sulfur dioxide gas (SO2) dissolves with molten rock (magma). Gas bubbles out and escapes when magma rises to the surface, where the pressure is lower. SO2 and other pollutants are emitted from the Kilauea volcano, which react with the oxygen and moisture in the atmosphere, creating a smog. The word Vog is an abbreviation for volcano smog. The Vog is a very visible haze that is a mixture of gas plus a suspended mixture of tiny particles, called aerosol. The aerosol is primarily composed of sulfuric acid and other sulfate compounds and toxic metals, including selenium, mercury, arsenic and iridium. This Vog, (like smog or fog) reduces visibility to both air and ground traffic. When there is enough moisture in the air it mixes with the Vog, creating droplets known as acid rain.

Mild Kona winds transport the Vog as far as the island of Oahu, approximately 200 miles away. Residents and visitors to Maui and Kauai are also very affected by this Vog. Strong trade winds carry this Vog close to 1,000 miles away to Johnson Island.

Vog symptoms vary from blurry or burning eyes, nose irritations, mild to severe headaches, sore or burning throats, an overall feeling of weakness and lack of energy to increased susceptibilities to respiratory ailments such as asthma and breathing difficulties.

Ingredients: Kerosolenum (probably the lightest product from distillation of crude oil) - for light headedness, headache; moderate convulsions, body limb weakness, fever with sweating, asphyxia (suffocation from inhalation of toxic gases, causing a lack of oxygen and unconsciousness).
Wiesbaden (Spring in Wiesbaden, Prussia) - for dizziness, fatigue dull, feeling heavy headed; itchy, painful, aching eyes; frequent sneezing; itching, runny nose,(watery or thick, mucus discharge), nose bleeds; dry, bad taste in mouth; red, hot, itchy face, throat irritation; shortness of breath, feelings of chest constriction; coughing up mucus; intolerable itching, biting, burning skin; painful skin irruptions; alternating feeling chills and feeling heat all over body; inflammation of the liver and/or kidneys.

Ko Ahi Remedy

Ko Ahi in Hawaiian translation is "cane fire." On Maui and Kauai, sugar cane fields are often burned to access the cane for processing into sugar. When the fields are burned, flames and enormous amounts of smoke and burnt debris fill the air. It can be seen from far distances. These field burnings usually occur at night. In the past, they also took place during the day.

People have reported a burning feeling in their eyes, nose and/or throats; red, itchy, watery eyes, dry and sore throats; coughing, blocked nasal passages, nose bleeds, headaches, sinus pressure, sinus infections, dizziness, overall weakness and low energy. Others reported asthma, lung irritations, smoke inhalation problems and difficulty in breathing. Winds can stir up left over debris, keeping the irritants airborne following a cane field burning.
